Unsung Heroines: Top 9 films celebrating real-life feisty heroines
Hello, my fellow Feisty Heroines! As I embark on highlighting stories of courage from everyday women, I’m kicking things off with a list of movies and documentaries about bold and brave women from history. Shockingly, stories about heroic women are still scarce in a world full of inspiring true tales. In my research, I found that out of the top 50 movies based on true stories, only seven were about women. Why? Stories about bold, courageous, and powerful women often go untold because men have historically controlled the narrative. But times are changing, and women's voices and achievements are finally getting the spotlight they deserve. Here are ten films featuring feisty, real-life heroines who defied the odds and shattered barriers. This list skips the fairy tales and tragic endings, focusing on true stories where women banded together or took the bull by the horns themselves to make real change.
This binge-worthy list celebrates fearless women—from groundbreaking activists to trailblazing pioneers. My hope is that as women's voices and achievements are increasingly highlighted, we'll see even more of these stories. For now, dive into these movies and documentaries featuring some seriously feisty heroines at the helm!

Feisty Heroine Movie #1: Cabrini (2024)
“Cabrini,” a vibrant biographical drama, is a testament to the invincible spirit of Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini, a trailblazing heroine who refused to be constrained by societal expectations. However, do not be fooled; this movie is not so much about religion as it is about sexism and anti-Italian sentiments within the bustling streets of New York City in the late 19th century.
Cabrini’s journey through the challenging frontier of American society is portrayed with fiery determination and heartfelt compassion. Her compelling blend of grit and grace makes this movie a must-watch for anyone who believes in the power of one woman to change the world. One of my favorite lines in the movie is when she says, “It takes a lot of courage to be who we’re meant to be.” If this doesn’t inspire and empower you, I’m not sure what will.
**Fun fact: There is a Memorial statue of Mother Cabrini in lower Manhattan dedicated to this powerful and OG Feisty Heroine. It is located in Battery Park City, overlooking the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in NYC, which is very fitting for the American patron saint of immigrants.
